Figure 1: Dual-stage trough distributor ensuring uniform irrigation across the packing bed.
A packed column is only as good as its liquid distributor. Trough Distributors (also known as Pan Distributors) are the industry standard for large-diameter towers, providing superior flow capacity and resistance to fouling. Unlike spray nozzles, they rely on gravity and precise orifice placement to ensure uniform wetting and prevent maldistribution.
This guide covers the engineering essentials to ensure your tower operates at peak efficiency without premature flooding.

Selecting the right distributor type is critical for hydraulic performance. Here is how trough distributors compare:
| Type | Max Capacity | Clog Resistance | Typical Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dual-Trough | Very High | Excellent | Large Dia. Towers (>1m) |
| Spray Nozzle | Medium | Poor | Small Towers, Clean Liquids |
| Pan Distributor | Low | Good | Vacuum Service |

Even a 3mm deviation from level across a 2-meter trough can cause 20% flow maldistribution. Always install adjustable support legs and verify levelness with a digital spirit level before welding the unit in place.
In slurry services or systems with high suspended solids, the small orifice holes wear out quickly, enlarging and changing the flow dynamics. Specify hardened alloys (e.g., 410S) or use larger orifice sizes to extend service life.
Trough distributors have lower free area than packing. If the vapor velocity under the troughs is too high, it creates a pressure drop spike, leading to flooding. Maintain a minimum vapor velocity of less than 60% of the packing's flood velocity.

FXSINO fabricates custom trough distributors for towers up to 8 meters in diameter. Send us your tower drawings or process data for a detailed engineering proposal.
