Environmental Balls: Lightweight Bio-Media for Air & Water Treatment

When weight is a constraint and pressure drop must be minimized, Environmental Balls (also known as Eco Balls or Bio Balls) outperform traditional structured packing. Their spherical design and high void space allow for excellent air circulation and biomass growth, perfect for VOC scrubbers, deodorization towers, and MBBR wastewater treatment.

Part 2: 3 Engineering Traps with Environmental Balls

Trap 1: Biomass Overgrowth & Clogging

In wastewater treatment (MBBR), the balls can become so heavy with biofilm that they sink or clump together. Design for regular backwashing or include mechanical agitators to slough off excess biomass.

Trap 2: Wind Shear in Empty Towers

Because they are lightweight, high gas velocities can lift the top layer of balls like a fluidized bed, causing them to collide and break. Install a mist eliminator or hold-down grid at the top of the bed.

Trap 3: UV Degradation Outdoors

Standard PP Environmental Balls degrade quickly under direct sunlight. If used in open-top bio-trickling filters, specify UV-stabilized resin or carbon black masterbatch to prevent embrittlement.
